Best Buy, ExxonMobil, And 3 Other Stocks In Strong Trends This Week
Tue, 24 Apr 2018 13:52:33 GMT

The following five stocks are currently in the midst of very strong trends and, according to VantagePoint, are likely to continue in that direction for the time being.

Best Buy

Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE: BBY) has somehow found a way to buck the trend in retail stocks, rising 70 percent since the start of 2017. But after a rough start to 2018, the stock looks to have turned around. As the chart below shows, Best Buy had a crossover to the upside on April 3. On that day, VantagePoint's predicted moving average crossed over the stock's simple 10-day moving average, which indicates the beginning of an uptrend.

Despite some near-term weakness, the two moving averages have not crossed back over, indicating the uptrend is intact.

Stock Market Rallies On Easing Syria Tensions, Earnings Optimism
Thu, 12 Apr 2018 14:10:22 GMT

Equity futures were higher Thursday morning as worries about a U.S. missile strike on Syria abated and investors looked forward to what analysts expect to be a bumper Q1 earnings season.

Helping the bullish sentiment this morning: one of the world’s biggest money managers, BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE: BLK), reported stronger-than-expected Q1 earnings. With the financial sector in the spotlight tomorrow —  three US megabanks, Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC), Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) and JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) releasing earnings before the open— the strong showing by BLK may indicate hope for a strong earnings season for the financial sector.

Also in earnings news, Delta Airlines, Inc. (NYSE: DAL) reported record revenues this morning amid strong demand, especially on some overseas routes. However, DAL said that rising fuel and labor costs had a slight dampening effect on overall revenue.

The market shrugged Thursday as the government said that new applications for unemployment benefits in the week ended April 7 fell to 233,000, from the prior week’s unrevised 242,000.

Yesterday, the three big U.S. indices finished lower, as investors appeared worried about a missile strike against Syria and an increasingly hawkish Fed. Energy and real estate were the only S&P 500 sectors in the green, The tension over the Middle East sent oil prices to a three-year high, which contributed to the lift in the energy sector.

On Wednesday, the release of the minutes from the last Federal Open Market Committee meeting appeared to show a more hawkish central bank. (See below.) But this morning it appears that market participants may be thinking that the Fed ...

What Effect Will Powell Have On Equities Markets?
Tue, 10 Apr 2018 15:40:55 GMT

The Queen of England might have used the words annus horribilis to describe the performance of stock markets in 2018. While that definition is not quite apropos, there has been a marked downturn in the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Nasdaq composite index, and the S&P 500 index. The above chart represents the record breaking performance of the Dow heading into 2018. The run-up to 26,500 and its subsequent declines are notable. The Dow defied gravity for years, and gains accelerated well into the first quarter of Trump’s presidency. The one-year performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average is +15.86 percent, with a reading of 23,932 (Monday, 9 April 2018).

The S&P 500 index gained, which is currently trading around the 2,600 level, experienced similar momentum to gain about 10.57 percent in a year. The technology-heavy Nasdaq is up 17.65 percent over one year and is hovering around the 6,900 level.

While it’s easy to see this recent volatility as a either a drastic turn toward a bear market or, if you’re an optimist, a slight hiccup in a still promising market. However, Olsson Capital trader Smythe Wilson maintained a more descriptive tack on the matter:

One would be remiss to say that the bull market ...

March Non-Farm Payrolls Trail Expectations; Economist Sees Healthy Normalization
Fri, 06 Apr 2018 14:46:28 GMT

After a strong start to the year, the labor market showed symptoms of normalizing, allaying some concerns of an overheated economy.

The below-consensus job gains for March — along with intensifying fears of a brewing U.S.-China trade war — spooked the markets, as the major averages all opened lower for Friday.

The U.S. economy added 103,000 jobs in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number was far below the 193,000 job additions that were expected, on average, by economists.

The February number was upwardly revised by 13,000 to 326,000, while January's was downwardly revised by 63,000, with the net revision for the first two months of the year being 50,000. The BLS non-farm payrolls data was at odds with the ADP report released earlier in the week, which showed an addition of 241,000 jobs by the private sector in the U.S.

The numbers should be taken in a broader context, said Bankrate economist Mark Hamrick.

"The job market is widely regarded to be close to full employment. So, hiring gains should be slowing at this point in the expansion," he said.

Notwithstanding the soft March number, the first quarter's average monthly hiring pace of 202,000 is above the average for all of last year, Hamrick said.

"If we begin to see signs that momentum is truly slowing in coming months, that's something different [and] more worrying," Hamrick ...
