CYCLEWight
Cycle Hub
Tue, 28 Nov 2017 15:01:00 GMT
You wait for one and then two come along together! The Newport Cycle Hub is now open. It is based at the Riverway Centre in Newport. It is fully enclosed and can take 16 bikes. It is locked overnight but you can obtain the lock code if you require access out of office hours. A great thing about this facility is that you can have a shower if you like. There is one inside the building. Another great benefit of the facility is that it has lockers so you can keep your cycling clothes etc locked up for the day. You do have to provide your own lock. There is 24hours cctv. If you do wish to access the lock code contact Philippa Daly at Action Isle of Wight. 524058
There is also a community cycle work station just behind the hub which is very well equipped.
Cycle Fest
Tue, 28 Nov 2017 15:01:00 GMT
CycleWight as part of the Cycle Fest organised a Cyclists' Breakfast in Newport at our favourite location. As before it was well attended though sadly many people went past without stopping.
It is time possibly to take some councillors down to the junction of Quay Street and Sea Street and record the number of cyclists who pass by. It would show how popular cycling is. CW would like to thank for their support Bicycle Island app which is part of the Isle of Wight Council Access Fund Programme.

Members of the Committee attended the launch event at Northwood Park. There were mixed reviews from some but as a group we found it a good opportunity to get to talk to people about cycling. People were impressed by the work the group is doing. From this there has been several new people join and others saying they intend to come to the AGM.
Cycle Parking
Tue, 28 Nov 2017 14:59:00 GMT
As part of the sustainable transport funding CycleWight were asked to carrry out a survey of cycle parking on the Island. We completed this  just over month ago and have found that there are over 700 racks of varying types around the Island that can be used. Some are great, check out Vernon Cottage and Ventnor Botanic Garden, and some are awful. We were also asked to identify places where there was a need for racks. We have done this through the committee and social media but if you have any ideas please contact us.
Linked to cycle parking the Council now has planning guidance on parking. This means developers now have to make sure they give due regard to cycle parking when proposing a new development. We have already used this to point out that a block of flats in Ryde had no provision for cycle parking even though it will be less than 200 meters from the National Cycle Network!
New Bridle Path in Newbridge
Sat, 04 Nov 2017 19:40:00 GMT
There is a new bridle path opened that runs around the back of Newbridge. Called Public Bridleway called S41, it runs over the track bed of the old railway line and links existing Bridleways S16 and S36. It is part of a 106 agreement, after a landowner asked permission to develop a solar farm on some of his land. It is a wonderful addition to the Rights of Way Network.  The owner is concerned that gates will be left open so it is important if these kinds of improvements are made to the cycling and walking infrastructure on the Island that they are well cared for by the users.
Access Fund
Sat, 04 Nov 2017 19:35:00 GMT
As reported previously, the Council has won another bid for funding to encourage Sustainable Transport. This is worth over £1million. As before it is to be split three ways: Tourism, Education and Employment. More details are coming out as time progresses. The really good news is that the funding is for three years so it should be able to achieve more than in the past when it has often been short term- one year. This made it difficult to plan ahead and have long term schemes. The Council has been supported in their successful applications by a company called A to There who have done an excellent job against fierce competition from around the country. IWC is one of the few Councils who have been awarded funds in all four rounds.

RTI Map
This is now two years old and is somewhat out of date. Should we produce an updated map and how should it be funded? It is generally agreed to do so. Visit Isle of Wight could be approached about some funding.
